Frequently Asked Questions

What can I expect when I see a Naturopathic Doctor?

Your first visit to a Naturopathic Doctor is generally 1 – 1 ½ hours in length. This allows time to gather as much information as possible about you, your past and present health concerns, and your future health goals. This thorough case history helps your Naturopathic Doctor determine the root cause of your symptoms, and create the best treatment plan for you to help in your healing process.

During the visit, questions will address your physical, emotional, and spiritual health - lifestyle, exercise, energy, diet, sleep, emotions, home and work environment, stress levels, and emotional and spiritual well-being. A complaint-oriented physical exam will be done in the first or second visit to assist in making an assessment and diagnosis. At any time during your visit, you will also have an opportunity to ask questions about your health concerns and about the treatment plan.

A Naturopathic Doctor understands the value of taking the time to listen and understand you as an individual and your health concerns. Your Naturopathic Doctor will provide your body with the support and treatment needed to help you achieve your goals.

Can I see a Naturopathic Doctor for small health concerns (ie: a cold)?

Yes! Naturopathic doctors are primary healthcare professionals, so you may see your Naturopathic Doctor for any health concern, acute and chronic.

Can my Naturopathic Doctor & MD work together?

Yes, naturopathic and conventional medicine complement one another. They differ in their approach to treatment. Your Naturopathic Doctor will work with your MD to ensure you have the best care. It is important for your Naturopathic Doctor to know what medications you are taking that are prescribed by your MD. It is also important to let your Naturopathic Doctor know of any supplements you are taking.

Naturopathic Doctors are trained to recognize conditions outside their scope of practice and refer to other health practitioners accordingly. This may be a Chiropractor, Osteopath, Registered Massage Therapist, Craniosacral Therapist, or a Medical Doctor.

Do I need a referral to see a Naturopathic Doctor?

No, you do not need a referral to consult a Naturopathic Doctor.

Does Health Insurance cover Naturopathic Medicine?

Most private and corporate health insurance plans cover naturopathic visits. It is important to check with your health care provider to determine the amount of your naturopathic coverage. If you do not have health coverage, keep your receipts for a medical expense deduction on income tax.

Are Naturopathic Doctors regulated in Ontario?

Naturopathic doctors are the only regulated health professionals in the field of natural medicine in Ontario. Naturopathic Doctors are regulated under the Drugless Therapy Act and are licensed by the Board of Directors of Drugless Therapy – Naturopathy (BDDT-N). The BDDT-N functions to ensure that Naturopathic Doctors are properly qualified to practice naturopathic medicine and that they follow appropriate standards of practice.

How can I tell if someone is qualified as a Naturopathic Doctor?

In Ontario, the public can call the BDDT-N to verify that a Naturopathic Doctor is registered to practice in the province. In addition, the OAND only accepts registered Naturopathic Doctors as members and can be contacted to verify if an Naturopathic Doctor is licensed.

Who can benefit from Naturopathic Medicine?

All ages and health concerns can benefit from Naturopathic Medicine.

What is the future of Naturopathic Medicine?
